September Update

Holy cow! I technically only have 24 days left of this project. Luckily, I'll be crossing several things off by the end of the month :) Unfortunately, there will be more than a few that I know I won't accomplish, but that's just life.

(004) See the Neuschwanstein "Cinderella"castle (changed from: See The Ellen Show live)
DONE! Saw this on July 1 and here's the picture to prove it...a blog post will come sooner or later.

(009) Give my new nephew a kiss (changed from: Replicate "The Kiss" in Times Square)
DONE! I gave this little man so much love!!

(011) Sit in first class on an airplane
I feel like I can't really say I accomplished this. I did upgrade my seat, but it wasn't to first class. I don't think I'll ever sit in first class :(

(014) Read a book a month (29/34)
30. The Happiness Project (read most of it)
31. Year of Wonders: A Novel About the Plague (it was surprisingly good!)
32: A Hidden Affair: Pam Jenoff (in progress)

(050) talk to a nutritionist on base (changed from: Run a 5k)
DONE! She's technically not a nutritionist, because you have to have a referral, but I am speaking with someone regarding nutrition.

(065) Watch 26 Movies I've never seen starting with each letter of the alphabet (25/26)
DONE!
Q. Quantum of Solace

(073) Go to the orchestra
DONE! Kind of. This is another one that I'll have to fudge. My point was to get some culture in my life. Instead of going to the orchestra I went to an opera—Romeo and Juliet in Verona! Same(ish) difference? I'm counting it!

(076) Create a cookbook of our favorite recipes
DONE! I put this together before my husband left. I still need to print out a few recipes from The Tale of Two Kitchens' site, but the cookbook has been created!

(077) Bake and give away a dozen different baked goods (10/12)
10. Sent oatmeal raisin cookies to the desert for a friend as a thank you for helping us before they deployed

Six Months Left!

Looks like I have my work cut out for me!

This is just a updated version of the list with what I still need to do. If I ever do this again I'd like to be more organized—it sort of drives me crazy how scattered everything is.

There's been a BIG change in our life, which means I need to actually change my list and update a few things. By the end of this year, my husband and I will be living in Italy! I feel like I'm doing fairly well at completing my list. I need to start reading more books and doing a few more things, but besides that...I like how it looks!

End of the Year Update

I know it's been awhile, but slow and steady wins the race...or in this case, completes the list. I started this a year ago today and I'm really happy I haven't ditched it over the past 365 days. Last year was full with challenges and blessings, and I'm excited to see what 2011 will bring. We will be moving this year, and because of where I think we're going, I may be revamping several of my items. But since it's been more than two months since I updated this list, here are the things I've worked on:

(014) Read a book a month (8/34)
I wish I had more to put down, but I've only read one book in the past two months: Something Blue by Emily Giffin. I need to step up if I want to cross off this category!
Something Blue

(018) Learn to take great food photos
Definitely a work in progress. I need to change this to "Learn to take great photos" just in general. I started a photography blog to help my progress and I'm considering taking a photo every day in 2011 to help. The new blog: Shutterbug Jess.

(027) Buy an SLR camera
I bought a Nikon d3100 on Black Friday, 2010. I'm over the moon with this purchase and love practicing with it!

R. The Rock. Watched this with my husband...it was okay, I suppose.

(075) Try one new recipe a month (35/34)

(082) Get my grandma’s recipes
CHECK! Now I just need to put them into a recipe book!

(088) Tip 100% of a restaurant bill
CHECK! I did this at a restaurant called O'Charleys, but I'd like to leave a 100% tip again sometime. I went to a very large group lunch (about 20 women PLUS kids) and the waitress we had was amazingly patient and got all of the orders right. She handled the group like a pro and did it all herself, which is a feat all on its own. My bill was only around $15, but she deserved every penny.

(091) Make a gingerbread house
CHECK! I went to a gingerbread house party and had an absolute blast! It was my first experience with making a gingerbread house and definitely won't be my last!

(092) Go on a ghost tour
CHECK! I have photos, i just...um...haven't posted them. I went on a ghost tour in Savannah the week before Thanksgiving, 2010. Unfortunately (I think), it wasn't scary at all. The acting was actually pretty horrible—that may have been the scariest part.

** Go through a corn maize
This was an extra goodie, but my husband and I went through a corn maze in Georgia. I loved wandering through the labyrinth and can't wait to go through another one!

(100) Take a bubble bath with candles at least once a month (5/34)

CHECK!

(077) Bake and give away a dozen different baked goods
I gave a dozen of these to my friend Brooke and spread the other dozen between friends.

(081) Bake at least 10 different cupcakes (2/10)
Bam! This is definitely a "different" cupcake. And from scratch, too!

It's Been Awhile...

Marking More Off!

(014) Read a book a month
First Comes Love: I'm a sucker for cute titles and fun book covers, so this was right up my alley. I found I related to the character more at the beginning of the book, since she was a newlywed and was the only one without children in her group of friends. Once she actually got pregnant it was interesting to read just to hear about her experience.

English American: Again, this book was perfect for me since I love England and I'm an American. It's about a girl who was born in America, but adopted to a British family. It was very interesting, entertaining, and a great read.

Something Borrowed: My friend (Ali at His Birdie's Nest) found out I had never read anything by Emily Giffen and so she sent me three of her books! I finally got around to reading Something Borrowed and I loved it. Now I'm reading Something Blue!

(074) Take a cake decorating class
I'm taking the Wilton Decorating Basics class right now and I love it!

(075) Try one new recipe a month

I took one last month and read part of my book while relaxing in the tub!

**Changed 009 (Go to an Oktoberfest to Replicate "The Kiss" in Times Square

Summer Cleaning

I've been working on this list for a little over six months and I have a few things I want to change around. My goal is to get an updated list up by the end of the week. Stay tuned!

Are you keeping up with your 101 in 1001 Days challenge?

Movies, books, food, and links!

Getting My Learn On

(014) Read a book a month

4. Savannah Comes Undone
This was the second book in the trio and it was a very quick read. Nothing spectacular about it.

5. The Best Day of Someone Else's Life
This book took a little getting into before it got good, but I really enjoyed it. A great chick-lit read and especially entertaining if you just got married, you're about to tie the knot, or you're a repeat bridesmaid!

*I need to step up my book reading; I should have seven complete by now...

Entertainment
(065) Watch 26 Movies I've never seen starting with each letter of the alphabet
B. Bounty Hunter
*Saw this at the $1 theater and thought it was entertaining. I'm happy I didn't pay full price to see it, though.

F. Fake Identity
*I have a confession to make: I LOVE Val Kilmer. Well, I loved him in The Saint. This movie, on the other hand, was terrible. Like awful, real bad, don't even think about watching it.

I. It's Complicated
*Cute movie. I thought I'd be grossed out by the adults being all in love, but it was cute.

N. North by Northwest
My husband put this on and made me for us to watch last night and I really liked it! I have another confession to make: I thought all Alfred Hitchcock movies were scary based on the few I've seen. This was a classic suspense movie, though, and not scary at all! I liked it :)

T. Time Traveler's Wife
*I read the book last September and sobbed like a baby through the last half. I really enjoyed the book and contemplated not watching the movie, because I didn't want them to ruin how much I liked the book. The movie, I thought, was created very nicely and followed the book enough to satisfy my imagination.

W. When in Rome
*As far as chick flicks go, this one was awful. I wish I could say what I didn't like about it, but honestly, the whole movie was pretty lame in my opinion...

Domestic Goddess
(075) Try one new recipe a month
14. Pasta with Tomato and Blue Cheese Sauce (Pioneer Woman)
*LOVED this dish and can't wait to make it again!

15. Twice Baked Potatoes (Pioneer Woman)
* Oh. My. Word. These were beyond delicious and unbelievably easy to make. I can't wait to have these again sometime. I also lightened it up by using fat free sour cream, Brummel and Brown butter, and not as many bacon bits. Delicious.

16. Margarita by Alton Brown
*Okay, I technically didn't make this, but I sure drank every last sip of it. My husband made this and it was hands down one, one of—if not the—best margarita I've ever tasted. Yes, it's time consuming and a sticky process, but the outcome is lip-smacking deliciousness.

17. Blueberry Pie
*See above, because I didn't make this one either. It was also extremely tasty and surprisingly not as bad for you as most pies are. He substituted Splenda for part of the sugar, too. Mmmmm...so yummy.

(082) Get my grandma’s recipes
*I got her recipes, but now I want to make a recipe book with them, so I'm not marking this complete, yet.

Good Will
(084) Pay for a stranger’s meal/coffee once a year
1. While I was home I got coffee at Satellite Cafe and left a $10 after I paid for my coffee and asked the drive-through attendant to pay for the next couple cars' orders after I left.

Leftovers
(098) Get three people to make lists of their own (0/3)
1. JoJo's Life in the 505
2. Kristin's 101 in 1001 Days
3. Amanda (my sister in law)! *Amanda, let me know when you get yours up and running so I can add a link here :)

Help, please!

If you're clicking over from Jesstagirl and Her Officer, hello!

When I first began this list, a couple people said it inspired them to begin their own 101 in 1001 list, so I was wondering how many of you actually started it because of me. You see, number 98 on my list is to "Get three people to make lists of their own."

So how 'bout it, have any of you started a list because of me?

(005) Go to three food festivals
Vidalia Onion Festival in Vidalia, Georgia. So first of all, it's pronounced "Veh-dawl-ee-ah," and their "festival" was quite lame, if I do say so myself. The highlight of the day was getting a bloomin' onion and hanging out with friends:

(014) Read a book a month
Best Friends Forever by  Jennifer Weiner. I really like Weiner's other books, but this one didn't entice me as much as the others. It was okay, but nothing spectacular.

Size 12 is Not Fat by Meg Cabot. Okay, so several years ago—heck, even maybe last year—this book would've been right up my alley. It's chick lit at it's best...or at least mediocre chick lit, but either I'm growing out of this style of writing or the plot and book in general just didn't do it for me. It was good, but I guess not my cup of tea. I think I'm in a book funk, because the last two books I've read haven't captivated me the way novels used to...

(039) Send thank you notes by May 1, 2010
Woohoo! I sent these out on time :) I have pictures of me sending them...somewhere...

(059) Try a new haircut
Yup! Done and done. I cut off around 7 inches of hair :)

(075) Try one new recipe a month
12. Banana Blueberry Muffins. I used this recipe from Tasty Kitchen and they were delicious! I'll take pictures the next time I make them...

  13. Chewy Coconut M&M Cookies. (used the recipe found here)

(077) Bake and give away a dozen different baked goods
I made cookies and sent them to Kenny in a care package.

(081) Bake at least 10 different cupcake

(085) Have a yard sale
The first week Kenny was gone my friends and I had a yard sale at my house!

(087) Purge my closet once a year (1/3)
I had a lot purge for the yard sale :)

Movies Galore!

It's been called to my attention that I've abandoned my 101 blog. Ha! NEVER! In fact, I've just been doing so much off my list I haven't had time to write about all of them. But I'm here now. I'll try catching up over the next few days.

Today I'll start with movies!

(065) Watch 26 Movies I've never seen starting with each letter of the alphabet

E. Extraordinary Measures. This was your typical feel-good movie filled with happy tears. I probably wouldn't see it again but I liked it at the time.

S. Sex and the City 2. This movie, from what i've heard, is either a love it or hate it movie. Well, I saw it and I loved it. I laughed, I cried, and I felt like I was there sending money in a far off country with four women I've grown up with. I also thought it was shorter than the first movie, but that goes back to the love/hate relationship to the movie.

U. Up in the Air. LOVED this movie. I think it's because the plot was somewhat original and the acting was great. I'm considering buying this if I see it on sale somewhere.

V. Valentine's Day. This movie is right up my alley. It's cheesy, it's funny, and I wanted to stab "McDreamy" in his cold, cold heart. Seriously though, loved it. I was worried about watching it, because of the reviews I heard about it, but I can't wait to go out and buy this and then watch it again!

 X. XII. Lame. This movie was kinda...lame. It turns out that this was a made-for-tv movie that aired a few years ago, but I thought it looked really great. In reality, it was just kinda...blah.

Making Progress

I really like having this list, because it makes me feel like I'm accomplishing things. It may take a long time, but it's exciting.

#13 Stay at a Bed and Breakfast
Kenny and I went to Savannah for a weekend and stayed at the 1895 Inn. The B&B was delightful and within walking distance to everything. Not to mention, it was one of the best-priced B&Bs in the Historical Center. Ed and Bob (the owners) cooked an outstanding breakfast each morning and were chalk full of information about Savannah. It was a really great weekend!

This one is in progress, but I'm happy to report that I'll reach this goal. Actually, the plan is to get them out by the end of this week...hopefully!

#40 Make a newlywed map
More on this one when it's finished, but when we were in Savannah we picked up an awesome world map at a place called The Paris Markets - by far one of the coolest stores I've been to. Kenny and I could've stayed there for hours. It's like an Anthropologie, but only their "home" section and with prices that are unbelievably affordable. It's too good to be true, really.

#63 Spend an entire day "unplugged" once every three months a year. (1/12)
YES! We walked around Savannah so much that I didn't even have time to get online. And after a hard work week, not being connected was just what I needed.

#68 Watch all six Star Wars (0/6)
We watched 4, 5, and 6 this weekend. It was my first time seeing them.

#75 Try one new recipe a month
7. Coconut Macaroons - Got this ridiculously easy recipe from my friend Kelly. It's so simple:
1/2 cup sugar
2 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut shavings
2 large egg whites
2 tsp vanilla
pinch of salt
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all by hand and form into small balls. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper; cook for 30 minutes flipping/turning macaroons half way through.

8. Pizza Week This week was beyond awesome and if you haven't read about our pizzas then you should do so. But I warn you: check it out after you've already eaten, because it's been known to make you want pizza!

9. Baked Lemon Pasta with Cedar Plank Salmon and Roasted Mushrooms. This was more like a three-in-one for new recipes, but it turned out great! The salmons was flavorful and was fantastic with the zesty pasta. Next time I make this I'll tone down the lemony flavor a bit.

10. Tomato, Mozzarella, and Pesto Pannini. I made this up on my own for lunch.

12. Buffalo Chicken Wings - Used Alton Brown's recipe and it—yet again—ceased to fail us. Next time we'll up the heat a bit, but these were deeeeelicious.

#96 Plant flowers
We actually planted flowers a few weeks ago and they're finally starting to sprout! It's very exciting to see something come from nothing!

#97 Plant Vegetables

Kenny and I have spent the past week working on our garden. Kenny's worked on it more, but I definitely got my hands, knees, feet, and clothes dirty, too. The only problem is that our puppy likes to hop the fence and dig, so we're not sure what's actually going to produce produce.

#100 Take a bubble bath with candles at least once a month
My lovely husband drew a bath for me a couple weeks ago to help me get rid of a headache. It was delightful

Movies and Creativity

Apparently the only thing I can do for my 101 list is watch movies. I'll be less lame, soon. I'm going to try accomplishing a lot of these when my husband deploys.

#65
C. Couples Retreat. Watched it last night and thought it was better than most of the reviews I heard/saw/read. My husband wasn't a fan, though; he thought it would be more like The Hangover.

H. The Hurt Locker. I really didn't see the appeal with this movie and definitely don't know how it won so many awards. It was very "blah" in my opinion.

#30
I was at TJ Max and saw an All-occasion card box! It's an accordian-style box and it came with 15 different cards. I added several other cards to it, so now I have cards ready to go. Now all I need to do is actually send them out!
